Damit und Um...zu

"Damit" and "Um...zu" are used to state purposes and/or reasons for something. The structures are as follows:

Damit + Nebensatz
Um + Ausdruck + zu + Infinitiv

Both can be used mostly interchangeably. However, "Damit" is more expressive in the sense that it can be used with any subject. The subject in the Nebensatz could be identical to or different from that of the main clause, though it's not elegant to use "Damit" in case the subject of reference has been mentioned or clear from context. In such situation, "Um...zu" is more appropriate. Let's take a look at examples:

"Er wollte die Nachbarn nicht durch den Motorlaerm aufwecken."

could be reformulated as in:

"Damit die Nachbarn nicht durch den Motorlaerm aufgeweckt werden."

And, the following sentence:

"Er wollte schneller zu seinem Wagen laufen koennen."

would be best with "Um...zu" as in:

"Um schneller zu seinem Wagen laufen zu koennen."

Damit keine Fingerabdruecke hintergelassen werden.
Damit niemand die Polizei anrufen kann.
Um nicht erkannt zu werden.
Damit niemand merkt, dass ein Einbrecher da war.
Damit er denkt, dass man ihn nicht hoert.
Damit er keine Chance mehr hat, wenn der Alarm anfaengt.
