"Als" is a connector joining a subordinate clause (Nebensatz) to a main clause (Hauptsatz). Its meaning is similar to "when" in English but denotes a condition that happened once in the past. Therefore, both past simple (Praeteritum) and present perfect (Perfekt) can be used here. Let's see some examples with "Praeteritum":
1) Als ich 10 Jahre alt war, ging ich in die Schule.
2) Als meine Grossmutter noch lebte, las sie mir mein Lieblingsbuch.
3) Als ich noch nicht verheiratet war, hatte ich Abendsbrot immer allein.
4) Als ich 18 Jahre alt war, konnte ich Auto fahren.
5) Als ich noch keinen Computer hatte, schrieb ich viel mehr.
6) Als ich zur Schule ging, lernte ich noch nicht Deutsch.
7) Als ich das erste Mal verliebt war, wollte ich gar nicht schlafen.
8) Als ich dich noch nicht kannte, liebte ich niemand.

Als ich die deutsche Sprache im ersten Jahrgang an der Uni studierte, war sie mir noch nicht zu schwierig. Aber danach... :'-(
Wirklich!? Es wurde aber gesagt, dass die deutsche Sprache im Vergleich mit Englisch einfacher in den weiteren Jahre.
English vocabulary is huge and contains lots of expression, idioms, exceptions, etc. Nobody could learn all those in the first year. The more you learn, the more things get complicate and sometimes contradictory in English...
